Agriculture is Tanzania’s main economic activity that employs about 77% of the total population. With the unequivocal changing of the climatic system, the rising concern is on how best natural resources can be utilized to sustain and increase productivity of crops and livestock.

KILKAM AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
The ChallengeBreaking Barriers to Sustainable Farming

Across communities, farmers face significant challenges that threaten their livelihoods and food security. These challenges include:

1. Poor Soil Quality

Years of chemical farming, deforestation, and climate change have depleted soil nutrients, making it difficult for crops to thrive. Without fertile land, farmers struggle to produce enough food for their families and the market.

2. Low Yields & Crop Failure

Unpredictable weather patterns, pests, and diseases contribute to declining harvests. Many farmers lack access to climate-resilient seeds and sustainable farming methods, making them vulnerable to food shortages and financial hardship.

3. Limited Market Access

Even when farmers produce quality crops, getting them to market is a challenge. High transportation costs, unfair pricing by middlemen, and a lack of direct buyer connections prevent farmers from earning fair incomes.

The result? Many small-scale farmers remain trapped in a cycle of poverty, unable to improve their living conditions or invest in better farming practices.
